Astronomy on Tap Bristol is back with another set of talks for our next event: join us at The Lansdown on Wednesday, the 14 th of October for an exciting evening of astronomy!

Our next Bristol event features talks by Dr. Grant Stevens, a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Bristol, who will talk to us about how we useAI in astronomy followed by Ileana Klein, a University of Bristol Ph.D. researcher, explaininghow astronomers use different wavelengths of light to study galaxy clusters. We will also have an astronomy themed quiz where you can win some prizes!

The event is FREE and all are welcome! We operate on a first come first-seated basis, so make sure you get there on time to secure a chair.

Giving AI a Telescope: What Could Possibly Go Wrong? – Grant Stevens

AI is getting very good at spotting patterns, making predictions, and occasionally getting things very wrong. In this talk, we’ll look at some of AI’s more entertaining mistakes, then ask what happens when we point it at the night sky. Can it find new stars and galaxies or just invent them? And how do we know when to trust what it sees?

Unveiling the Secrets of Galaxy Clusters: More Than Meets the Naked Eye – Ileana Klein

Is your favourite flavour of astrophysics black holes? Or cosmology? Or perhaps you’re a fan of all astrophysics? Galaxy clusters contain all your favourite things and more! As the largest gravitationally bound structures in the Universe, galaxy clusters are sensitive to most astrophysics, and looking at them at different wavelengths can unveil different extraordinary characteristics and processes. From the famous Bullet Cluster to the new FornaX survey, we’ll explore how the Euclid and XMM-Newton telescopes give us different views of these giant systems and what we can learn through their complimentary observations.
