Campus Canopy Census

PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Campus Canopy Census is an ongoing, crowd-sourced initiative using real-time data to audit every single tree on the NC State campus.

Thousands of valuable trees shade our campus walkways, but they require continuous monitoring and maintenance for proper stewardship. By participating in this project, you help NC State’s urban forester assess and protect the campus canopy. Using your phone and a special tape measure to measure tree diameter at breast height (dbh), you will log vital data to help identify at-risk trees and track campus carbon sequestration.

Whether you are looking for a quick way to give back, a fieldwork activity for your ENVFY/ES courses, or a project for the Honors Forum, your data makes a difference for NC State Campus Health.

SWAG & PRIZES

Beyond contributing to vital campus sustainability data, participants can receive various NC State swag and prizes:

-> 4 engraved Stanley Cups awarded to the Top 4 “carbon sequestors” - the 4 individuals who collect data on the greatest number of trees while also covering the greatest distance on campus (tracked through the data submitted).

-> The first 50 participants to collect data and check-in at the live tabling event between Oct. 12th - Oct16th for the Pack Science Challenge will receive free t-shirts.

-> Stickers available for all participants to show off their Wolfpack stewardship (while supplies last).

WHAT YOU’LL NEED OCT:

 - Be on NC State's campus 

• Time Commitment: Maximum 1 hour.
• Location: Anywhere on the NC State campus.
• The Task: Stop by the D.H. Hill Jr. Library to borrow a specialized tree circumference tape measure. Head outside, find a tree (or several!), and give it a “hug” to measure its circumference.
• The Impact: Log your measurements on your phone to instantly calculate carbon storage and flag potential health risks for our campus forestry team.
