More Information
A chance to spot a sub 24 hour crescent occurs Friday Feb 28. This is a crescent that would not be seen with a casual glance at the sky. It requires a good horizon (elevation or sighting across a clear field) and purposeful searching to see this most subtle appearance of new moon. The average window to spot a very young crescent is 40 - 60 minutes. It is oftimes seen 15-20 minutes after sunset when twilight reveals its hairline profile. Sometimes averted vision is required to spot it.
New Moon is Thurs Feb 27 at 7:44 PM.
On Friday Feb 28 at sunset (6:28 pm) the new crescent will be 22 hr 44 min old and 10º alt. Moonset is 7:30 pm.
Traditional hand measurements will be used to aid in locating the crescent.
Weather permitting, location to be determined.
Crescent Watch Caution: Remember to not scan the skies with binoculars prior to sunset because a new crescent is in proximity of the sun.
