Invasive Species Citizen Science Program
Monitor for the presence of unwanted pests.
More Information
Our survey season is typically from April through October and we start accepting applications a couple of months before (approx. mid-February – late March). We will review applications up through June.
Overview: As you know, commerce and people are able to move more readily around the world. This increases our risk of bringing unwanted pests that can be devastating to our Kentucky landscape. To combat this, we have developed the Kentucky’s Invasive Species Citizen Scientist Program. This initiative aims to help keep out or slow the spread of unwanted pests in Kentucky through community involvement.
How It Works: Participants will place traps containing a pheromone lure or conduct visual surveys to detect the presence of unwanted pests. The results are recorded electronically using the Survey123 mobile app. This can be done in and around your neighborhood, making it accessible and convenient for everyone.
Who Can Participate: Anyone can join the program! Whether you’re a seasoned scientist or a curious beginner, your contribution is valuable. Young children are encouraged to participate but should be supervised by adults. Training is provided to ensure everyone is well-prepared.
Get Involved: All you need is a willingness to record trap information using the Survey123 mobile app. By participating, you will play a crucial role in protecting Kentucky’s landscape from invasive pests. Join us in this important effort to safeguard our environment!
