New to hiking with your pup? Drop by Ranger Jacque’s Discovery Station for helpful trail tips—like how to pack out dog waste minus the awkwardness and stink (hint: there are some surprisingly great hands-free options!), what gear is actually worth shelling out for, and what wildlife to watch out for to keep you and your dog smiling for miles! Just getting started hiking with your dog? Visiting the area or recently moved nearby? Stop by this Discovery Station with Ranger Jacque to get trail-ready with your four-legged friend! This informal, come-and-go table is all about making your hikes more enjoyable—for both you and your pup. Learn about trail petiquette, local dog-friendly routes, and get the real scoop on which gear is worth having, like paw protection, hands-free leashes, and a few doggy first-aid basics. Ranger Jacque will also talk about what dog owners need to know when it comes to rattlesnakes and other life in the desert — from common dangerous encounters to truly effective preventive measures, and smart steps to keep your pet safe out there. Plus, get ideas for how to keep your pup active during the summer when hiking options are more limited. And if you’re looking for some extra motivation to hit the trails, this is a great time to learn about the Maricopa County Parks’ 100 Miles in 100 Days Challenge. This popular annual challenge invites hikers, dog walkers, runners, and more to log 100 miles across at least three county parks by February 8. Usery Mountain Regional Park is a perfect place to start, and Ranger Jacque will explain how to sign up, log your miles, and earn rewards like a limited-edition finisher’s shirt and a chance to win an Annual Park Pass. It’s a great way to set a trail goal for you and your dog—and explore more of the parks together. No hike required—just stop by, say hi, and leave with some helpful tips and info. Great for new pet owners, visitors, or anyone looking to feel more confident before hitting the trail with a dog. MEETING LOCATION: Outside Nature Center No registration required.
