MoNASC, Missouri Natural Area Stream Conservacy
MoNASC is a project to designed to accomplish 3 goals;
- Establish or follow protocols to measure and document ecological integrity and water quality of streams in natural areas and high quality landscapes on public land. These streams may serve as reference streams at a future time.
- Archive and organize that data and information such that it may be used to advocate for protection of these and other streams. Project management is deciding if a wide range of such streams or a few demo areas would be an optimum model. Hopefully others would become interested and participate or start their own similar projects, and
- understand the difference in ecological drivers between urban streams and less impaired reference streams so as to benefit stream restorations of the future.
- Ongoing
More Information
MoNASC is a project designed to explore the ecological systems of less impaired reference streams as well as provide known data for these reference streams. There are multiple goals for this activity and I hope to increase awareness of and help protect high quality less impaired streams in the Mo. Ozarks. I have concluded that many current ideas about urban stream restoration are wrong, which increases the importance of understanding and protecting less impaired streams. This project is currently in the planning phase. See less
