Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: Scorpion Safari

Come hang out with Ranger Jacque on a nighttime scorpion hunt! We’ll shine black lights on the trail to spot these glowing critters and dig into what makes them so unique. Discover the hidden world of scorpions on this Scorpion Safari! The adventure begins at the trailhead/picnic area, where there are port-a-johns, but no water fountains. The program starts with a 15-minute overview on scorpion identification and behavior before we head out in search of these fascinating arachnids. We’ll walk about a mile along the Towhee and Metate trails using black lights to spot glowing scorpions along the way. Trail can be rocky, sandy, and uneven. Be prepared for an hour plus outdoors—wear closed-toe shoes, bring a water bottle, and dress appropriately. Don’t forget your black light for the best scorpion-spotting experience! Note that the trailhead is almost a quarter mile walk from the parking lot, and only cash is accepted at the contact station. Please allow time to park and self pay. PLEASE NOTE: Outdoor summer programs may be canceled on short notice due to severe weather, including extreme heat events.
