Maricopa County Parks and Recreation: Sunset Stroll

Join Ranger Jacque for a relaxed 2-mile hike through the stunning Sonoran Desert — discover its unique beauty and amazing wildlife. Take a 2-mile loop hike along the Metate and Spur Cross trails with Ranger Jacque. Along the way, we’ll explore why the Sonoran Desert ranks as one of the most biodiverse deserts on the planet. You’ll get a closer look at desert plants and their clever survival strategies. Keep your eyes open for wildlife like mule deer, squirrels, rabbits, a variety of bird species, and plenty of reptiles that call this desert home. This easy-moderate trail includes some loose rocks, uneven ground, and gentle elevation changes, so sturdy closed-toe shoes are recommended. Be sure to bring plenty of water and sun protection like hats and sunscreen. Restrooms are available near the trailhead, but there are no water fountains. Note that the trailhead is almost a quarter mile walk from the parking lot, and only cash is accepted at the contact station. Please allow time to park and self pay. PLEASE NOTE: Outdoor summer programs may be canceled on short notice due to severe weather, including extreme heat events.
